Gove announcement welcomed

The Australian Workers Union today welcomed the announcement by Rio Tinto that the Pacific Aluminium’s Alumina Refinery at Nhulunbuy would continue to operate after the Northern Territory Government committed to a secure supply of gas.

Queensland Branch Secretary-elect Ben Swan said this announcement was very welcome news for AWU members and the Nhulunbuy community.

“The AWU has been at the forefront of fighting to ensure that Aluminium industry remains a vibrant industry across Australia.

“This decision gives workers at the Nhulunbuy site the certainty they deserve and it goes a long way to giving certainty to Aluminium workers across Australia.

“This announcement is not only good for workers at the refinery but also for the community of Nhulunbuy who rely so heavily on this facility for their town’s survival.

“The Australian Workers’ Union recognises the vital role that Government has to play in ensuring the Aluminium industry continues to be able to support workers and communities and we welcome a continuing dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure the Gove operation’s continuing viability”.
