Acting Secretary's Message - August
We're seeing more organisations attempting to shift from full-time secure jobs by outsourcing to labour hire contractors. These moves which slash full time employment in favour of insecure labour hire jobs is a kick in the guts for workers.
In local government, the AWU has found many full-time positions have been contracted out to labour hire, with some Councils planning to outsource even more work. These labour hire workers are denied the same conditions and opportunities which are enjoyed by permanent Council workers.
Your Union believes these Council employees should be treated with dignity and respect, and given a fair opportunity for secure employment. Councils need to step up and commit to their workforce by replacing existing full-time roles with new full-time employees – not sending the work off to labour hire companies.
This is why we're standing by our members and holding firm in our push to protect secure jobs for workers in the enterprise agreements currently being negotiated with the Brisbane City and Gold Coast City Council.
