Bluescope Steel Senior Delegate Retires

Wednesday 31st January 2018

Long time AWU Bluescope Lysaght senior site Delegate John Sulejmani retired on Friday 12 January 2018 after 26 years employment with Bluescope Steel and more than 25 years as an AWU member.

The Lysaght site at Archerfield shut down operations at lunch time on his last day of employment to hold a sausage sizzle and presentation to celebrate Johns working history with Bluescope Steel.

John’s supportive wife Viv came along to help celebrate the occasion (some thought to make sure John did actually leave).

Managers past and present were in attendance to wish John and Viv well.

Queensland Branch President and Organiser for the site, Marina Chambers presented John with a certificate to honour his service and contribution to the Australian Workers Union.

To state that John was a staunch AWU supporter does not begin to describe his dedication to his role as senior site Delegate for the Union, or his ability to liaise  with workmates, managers and senior leaders in Bluescope over his many years as site representative.

John attended many AWU National Conferences, Steel Conferences and Industry Conferences on behalf of the Queensland Branch where he gained knowledge and fought for his members improved conditions and was a valued member of each.

John was one of the AWU faces on the car magnets in the “Your Rights at Work Campaign” and proudly displays it on his somewhat large beer fridge in his also somewhat large man shed.

John is a keen golfer (to put it mildly) and plays in many amateur tournaments around Australia in his spare time, and he and Viv have purchased a Winnebago and intend to travel around Australia for 3 months.   They also have 6 grandkids so they should be kept busy.

John met many officials and members in his time with the AWU and we all wish him and Viv well in their retirement and look forward to seeing them at Union events.

It is always a sad day to see a long time member, friend and workplace delegate retire however John held site elections before he retired and has left the site in the good hands of a new senior site delegate and co-delegate.

Thanks to your many years of service to your fellow work colleagues.
