Branch Secretary's Message | April eWorker

Wednesday 17th April 2019

The Australian Federal Election has now been called for Saturday 18th May 2019 - and working Australians have a choice about the future direction for the country.

Under the current LNP Federal Government, we've seen growth in wages slow to a halt while living costs go up and up. Employers are in a race to the bottom when it comes to wages, turning good full-time jobs into insecure casual jobs.

And hundreds of thousands of retail and hospitality workers are now paid less to do the same job thanks to penalty rates cuts. Who knows who will be next in line for a similar pay cut.The LNP's plans for Australians are for low skill, low wage, casual jobs - and tax cuts for big business.

Working Australians needs a payrise. We need a Government who will raise the minimum wage to a living wage, restore penalty rates and stop the casualisation of jobs.

Big corporations have too much power - the rules are working in their favour. Meanwhile everyday working Australians are being left behind.

It's clear the rules are broken - it's time to change the rules.  And the only way to change the rules is to change the Government.

For over 130 years, the AWU has proudly stood up for workers.  And under this Government. we've seen how hard-fought gains can easily disappear when a Government pursues an agenda that attacks working people. We need a Government that works for working Australians - not against them.

That's why this Federal Election is so important - I hope you will make your vote count.
