Branch Secretary's Message | December eWorker

Friday 21st December 2018

The Festive Season is now well and truly upon us. I hope our members will have some time for rest and relaxation with those who are near and dear to you over the season.

And for those of members who may be working on the public holidays over the next few weeks - thank you. You deserve your penalty rates for working while others are enjoying time with loved ones.

It's at this time of the year we are reminded of the importance of the battle to protect penalty rates. We welcome the announcement by the Federal Labor opposition, who if elected to Government will restore penalty rates for those workers who had their wages cut unfairly when penalty rates were cut.

Reflecting on the past year, there's no doubt that working people have had to remain vigilant in their fight for a fair go. Under the current Federal Government, we see the power and profits of big business grow, while wage growth and job security are falling. There's never been a more important time for people to join the Union.

AWU members can be really proud of their efforts during the year - standing together to secure better outcomes in their workplaces. They've stood together against bosses who've tried to replace workers with contractors, cuts to real wages and conditions - demanding to be treated with dignity and respect.

It goes to show that being a member of the Union is still the best way for working people to achieve better results in the workplace.

When we stand together in Union - we're stronger together.

I look forward to standing with AWU members again in 2019 to keep up this fight for fairness and dignity at work.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

In Unity
